Nadine Martell Carlson Owner & Director

My name is Nadine Carlson, owner and licensee of Ascension Health Homes. I am honored and proud to provide your loved one with our devoted leadership team, who lovingly support and encourage the lives of seniors and adults. I also greatly value the opportunity to effect the lives of the friendly, insightful staff that I employ.

In 2010 I was invited to provide a safe, clean environment where staff, seniors and adults feel valued, fulfilled and supported. My organizational skills, creativity, strengths in working with people and paying attention to multiple details were necessary for its success. These skills were developed during my years in corporate project management. They were fine tuned during the time of owning and operating a customer service driven retail business. The combination of these experiences created the structure of how Ascension Health Homes are operated and the type of people that manage them.

It is my goal to continually invest in the homes to maintain a comfortable, home-like environment for the seniors and adults that live there. It is also my goal to invest in the future of my staff so they grow and continue to work at Ascension Health homes.

Abraham Lincoln says, “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years”.

The above quote drives my passion to treat all people with respect and dignity, to view each person as valuable, to make the most of every opportunity and to give my best no matter the circumstances.

Operations Director

Amanda Kohalisky Operations Director

I first discovered that I had a passion to work with Seniors and Adults when I was 13 years old. I spent a whole summer caring for an Adult with disabilities. That summer opened my eyes to a different understanding of people. I realized my passion that summer, to pursue a career that would allow me to make a difference in people’s lives. And that is why I love my job and going to work every day. I am able to use my strengths and ensure that we provide the best possible care to our residence and give support to the team. It warms my heart to see the sparkle in a residents eyes when something I have said or done makes a difference in their quality of life. Through my job, I have mastered valuable skills including problem solving, verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as patience and compassion. Our company is family owned and operated and very much involved in the day-to-day flow of the homes. My work family is amazing, and I find laughing and working daily toward reaching our goals a fulfilling experience.

I am detail oriented, a creative problem solver and good listener. Some of my strengths include finding resources for those we serve as well as our staff, using creative solutions to solve problems, and being an effective verbal and non-verbal communicator.

I’m a firm believer in my life quote. “People may forget what you said, people will forget what you did, But people will never forget how you made them feel.” -Author Maya Angelou

Amy Brott House Manager I

My name is Amy Brott, House Manager at Ascension Health 1. 18 years ago I discovered that I had a passion for taking care of people after my nephew was born with special needs. From then on, I knew I wanted to help people. And, finally, 3 years ago I finally had the opportunity to fully embrace my passion that started years ago.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, helping them to reach any goal they desire. I chose this field of work to help make anything possible for the people that we care for by giving them the love, understanding and encouragement needed to help them to become the person they want to be. I enjoy seeing the happiness on my resident’s faces when they reach their goals they have set. I have 2 years experience working in this field and many more through personal experience within my family. I look forward to many years working with people of all different abilities.

I enjoy and am very good at cooking, cleaning, organizing, arts and crafts, listening, paying attention to details as well as the needs of others. Some of my strengths include being trustworthy, dependable, honest, organized and detail orientated.

House Manager II

Heidey Merryman House Manager II

My name is Heidey Merryman, House Manager for Ascension Health II. I take care of five love-able ladies in my home. We call ourselves a family because we all live together and get along.

Even as a child, I have always had a passion for helping people. I grew up in an Adult Foster Care environment with my family and learned at a young age to respect your elders and treat people as you want to be treated. I also learned that if someone was having a “bad” day, it was great to have someone to listen and help make them feel better. As a teenager, I realized I happened to be good at making a bad day a good one for the people I interacted with. This increased my desire and interests to pursue healthcare. I started as resident aid, successfully became a certified nurse assistant and medical assistant. I worked in nursing homes, resident homes and St. Mary’s Hospital for many years.

As time passed, I realized my desire was to help people through a one-on-one basis in an adult home setting. It gives me a great sense of pride knowing that I do my best as a caregiver and friend. My ‘girls’ know I take good care of their needs and keep them safe. I use my strengths of being a quick thinker and problem solver to find resolutions to situations or emergencies. I am calm and always focus on safety first.

House Manager III

Kazilynn Irwin House Manager III

I am the Manager at Ascension Health III. I specialize in maintaining a healthy environment and monitoring my residents consistently for health and happiness. I learn new responsibilities very quickly and set goals to do my best and to complete them 100% of the time with a great attitude.

I started out working in the caregiving field when I was 18 at a daycare center while studying child development and family studies at Western Michigan University. Originally, I served as a nanny. I loved becoming part of a family and working as a team to maintain family dynamics, their views and outlooks. In 2020 I realized it was time for a career change to use my caretaking skills to serve adults and seniors. At Ascension Health III I started as Support Staff and recently was promoted to Manager.

Throughout my whole life I have been a people person. I found great satisfaction in helping my own family and grandparents live and be healthy as well. My joy to care for others includes getting to know all about my residents. It is not just how to keep them healthy but how they grew up, their families, their likes and dislikes, and things they would love to achieve. One of my biggest skills is being a great listener and someone that everyone knows they can always come to and talk to for advice. I am here to make their lives better and help them move forward towards their goals.

I can’t wait to see what my future holds here! So grateful to work for such an amazing company.

Our Approach

Our first step in providing effective care is to learn about you and your loved ones needs and goals in order to provide long term quality of life and peace of mind. Once a resident is admitted, we communicate and work as a team with professionals and family members or supports to maintain the health and personal care of each person that lives in our homes. Our approach to provide comprehensive care includes:

  • Creating individualized and comprehensive care plans to improve the quality of life
  • Providing comfort, care and compassion in a residential setting
  • Scheduling Live in staff to reduce risk of COVID infection from multiple staff coming and going
  • Screening of visitors for COVID symptoms to protect the residents within the home
  • Placing individuals in the home best suited to meet their needs.
  • Offering a comfortable, active environment

Our Story

In 2010, a vision was born to provide exceptional comfort, care and compassion to those that cannot live independently. With the help of experts in the adult care field, our family owned business was created and grew from one home to three. Our intent was always and continues to focus on creating a warmhearted residential home environment for our residents in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We take care of and support you or your loved one by offering long-term comfort, care and compassion in a home-like setting. Our dedication to our philosophy has resulted in homes that are known throughout West Michigan as having the best in service available.
